Step 1: Check Your Contract Status
Before initiating a porting request, ensure that your current mobile contract is in a rolling or cancelable state. In Germany:
Fixed-term contracts often require cancellation before the end of the agreed term. Check your contract’s end date and notice period to confirm if it’s eligible for porting.
Rolling contracts automatically renew after the initial term. You’ll need to give notice to your provider, even for these contracts, to initiate the porting process.
Tip: If you’re unsure about your contract status, review your provider’s terms or contact their customer service for clarity.
Step 2: Notify Your Existing Provider
In Germany, it’s mandatory to notify your current provider that you intend to port your number. Without this step, your porting request may be rejected. Follow these steps to ensure proper notification:
Contact your provider: Reach out via their official customer service channels (e.g., phone, email, or online portal). Use the details provided in your contract or bill.
Submit a termination notice: Clearly state that you wish to port your number and include the following details:
Your full name and address (as registered with the provider)
The mobile number(s) you wish to port
Your customer or account number
Request confirmation: Ask for a written acknowledgment of your termination notice and porting request.
Important: German regulations allow you to request "porting upon termination" (Übertragung nach Vertragsende) or "porting during an active contract" (Übertragung während eines laufenden Vertrags). Clarify your preference when notifying your provider.
